Book Launch cum Parenting Talk via Zoom, 7.30-8.30pm
Who are the gifted children? Nature or nurture?
Though gifted education programmes have been established for more than half a century in many countries (Israel, U.S., New Zealand, Singapore and several other developed countries), there are still many myths about gifted education which perplex many parents from time to time. Very few researches have been done within our Asian context.
GATE has been working with gifted children in Singapore and the region (Hong Kong & Shanghai) for nearly a decade, and conducted our research based on real life case studies of gifted students in the region. With much enthusiasm and elation, we are going to launch our new book “Intellectually Off the Charts – Case Studies of Gifted Children in Singapore” which is the first book to focus on the gifted children and education in Asia, particularly in Singapore.
Join us for this official book launch and our signature talk on Gifted Education with real life cases and practical advice, by our expert panel based on the Singapore education system.
Interesting topics covered:
- Characteristics of the gifted
How to identify and determine if my kids are gifted/advanced learners?
- IQ test and achievement assessment for pre-schoolers
What are the internationally recognized IQ tests? How is the IQ test like? How to interpret an IQ test report?
- Misconceptions of being gifted
Is gifted education equivalent to accelerated learning? What is the most effective parenting style? Why do some gifted children fail to become successful adults? Are there any strategies proven by research to transform the gift into success?
- Uniquely Singapore – Let’s Talk about GEP
What are the GEP selection tests all about? Shall we prepare our children for GEP? Does high IQ guarantee GEP? GEP means smooth sailing for PSLE?

Parenting Talk
With the growing number of education options available, many parents are confused and lost. This is particularly so for parents with children who are intellectually advanced. They may face the following dilemmas:
Dilemma 1: GEP vs. PSLE
Shall we just focus on PSLE instead of selecting the GEP curriculum? What do GEP pupils learn? Is it very demanding? Will GEP affect my child’s PSLE result? How will GEP benefit my child and optimise his/her advanced intellect?
Dilemma 2: IQ vs. GEP
My child is a Mensa junior member with high IQ, will he pass the GEP test? How is the GEP selection process like? Is it reliable? Do I need to prepare my child for GEP test?
Dilemma 3: PSLE v.s DSA
How difficult is to go into top secondary schools by DSA? Is DSA a good option for my child? Who should apply for DSA? How do the schools select DSA students? How do I prepare my child for the DSA?
Dilemma 4: Skipping level or to remain
Shall we let our intellectually advanced children skip level? What is the probability for early admission to P1? What can we do if our child is bored in school?
Dilemma 5: Singapore education system or International school system?
Which school system suits our children? What is the difference between A level and IB? What is IP, AP, SAT and ACT?
At Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), we have worked with a few thousand high ability learners and their parents on different areas, from GEP, PSLE, DSA to college application. In this parenting workshop, we will share our experience and tips with our GATE parents and guests.
